Vernal Ash peered out of his sunroom across an alley Thursday evening to where Craig Jenks and James Bazemore were working on a motorcycle and asked, "Ready to die?" Bazemore told police. Jenks, 22, of LaPorte was shot once in the head with a gun. Moments later, Ash shot himself in the head, said Dave Garipy, LaPorte's chief of detectives.

Ash, 60, was pronounced dead early Friday morning. Jenks was pronounced brain dead at 8 a.m. Friday but was kept on life support so his organs could be harvested, Garipy said. "He's officially dead," Garipy said. Jenks was visiting his parents' house at the time of the shooting.

Garipy said there had been minor disputes between the two before, but nothing that would indicate it would escalate. Three university employees were treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital as a safety precaution, said Battalion Chief Elisha Hamblen, Terre Haute Fire Department.

The leak was discovered about 5 a.m. Friday when a university employee was making, routine checks of equipment at the power facility. Hamblen said he is not sure how much of the chemical leaked. It had leaked in a liquid form. Most of the chemical was contained to the plant by 11:30 a.m.

Workers were still cleaning up at the plant Friday evening, but the campus had reopened. No residents in the area were evacuated. Knox County man pleads guilty in death of Erika Norman Associated Press Vincennes Brian E. Jones pleaded guilty Friday to strangling Erika Elaine Norman, one of two Vincennes University students he has been charged with killing, as part of a plea agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Jones, 23, of Vincennes, would serve a 60-year prison term for the murder.

He was also required to explain the details surrounding Norman's death in court Friday. In return, Knox County Prosecutor John Sievers agreed not to seek the death penalty for the murder and rape of Brook Elizabeth Baker, another Vincennes University student Jones is accused of killing. Knox Circuit Judge Sherry L. Biddinger Gregg is expected to rule Sept. 8 whether to accept the plea agreement.

Jones said Friday during the hearing that he got into an argument with Norman at her apartment and threw a lamp at her. He then strangled Norman, loaded her body in a plastic tub and dumped it in an Illinois cornfield, he said. Ex- cop pleads guilty to bigamy Associated Press South Bend A retired St. Joseph County police sergeant pleaded guilty Friday to bigamy for marrying a television anchorwoman without divorcing his second wife. Charles Feirrell's guilty plea a day after testimony began in his trial was in exchange for dismissal of charges of perjury and providing false information on a marriage license application.

Feirrell's attorney and prosecutors also agreed to let a judge decide whether he will be sentenced on a felony count or a misdemeanor count of bigamy. The felony count carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison; the misdemeanor count carries a one-year maximum sentence. Feirrell said he had "weighed the options that were available to me and I thought this would be the best choice based on the circumstances." "He has his reasons, let's leave it at that," said Sanford, who made no opening statement when the trial began Thursday. Feirrell, 45, married television news anchor Amanda Hart, 36, on Dec. 3 even though he was still married to his second wife, Susan Feirrell, whom he married in 1981.

Just before the wedding, Feirrell was shot in the leg as he stepped from his marked squad car in the parking lot of University Park Mall en route to a meeting with a female officer for coffee. That shooting has never been solved. The marriage to Hart was later voided by the judge who performed the ceremony. Feirrell, who had talked of one. day running for sheriff, was suspended from his county police post and has since retired.

He filed for divorce from Susan Ferrell last month. Sanford said he doesn't believe come; more information available by calling 462-8532. "A man like Charlie Ferrell who has devoted more than half his life to public service and has no criminal record at all should certainly be considered for misdemeanor treatment," Sanford said. "I would guess that Charlie Feirrell is not looking at any jail time." St. Joseph County Prosecutor Chris Toth said his department has not yet determined what type of sentence it will seek.

"Obviously we didn't agree to agree to misdemeanor treatment so we've left that (felony) option open," he said. Susan Ferrell said she was pleased and relieved by the plea. "I never wanted it to go to trial," she said. Hart issued a statement thanking people for their support, saying she was "grateful this nightmarish experience has come to an end.
