As my friend Robert Teed, PCC often says "words matter"The Future of Workplace is our theme for both Amsterdam (September 7) and Austin (December). This is not another event with vested interest speakers trying to drag you back into the office, or design extravagant collaborative spaces as it hits their bottom line better, or sell technology to measure metrics that are already dated. This is an event to discuss what Workplace will look like, and more importantly be purposefully used for, in the next 5 to 10 years. Place clearly has it's place but it will never be what it used to be (louder for the brokers in the back), and for good reason. Miro has a lot of employees choosing (because choice really matters) to be in the office, because Daaf Serné, MCR, SLCR and team have created an environment that they want to be in, in a city that is young, vibrant and eco-centric (not merely eco-friendly). They (shock horror) asked the employees what they wanted and (spoiler alert) it was not ping pong or more collaboration space. We will address how employees can flourish in the new environment (and when working hybrid) in a roundtable with Simone Fenton-Jarvis BSc MBA FIWFM and Ali Khan, how to create Future Flexible strategies with Tammy Lindberg and Hamish McKenzie and the technology we will need to support ways of working with Sid van Wijk and Rowan de Bruin. We will also showcase the most innovative food and beverage program I have seen (more to follow on that)And to add to what is already an incredible agenda, our friends at EDGE (thank you Cees van der Spek) will be hosting a welcome event at the visually, socially and environmentally stunning Valley."Valley embodies the major transformation being undertaken by the Zuidas district in Amsterdam. Originally a business district, Zuidas has developed into a lively, multifunctional environment that forms an integral part of Amsterdam. Valley is in perfect keeping with this transformation, as it offers the perfect living, working and recreation space. We call this ‘the evolution of city life’."https://lnkd.in/gYsifdfA

Hybrid spaces popping up on high streets - pilots aiming to REENERGIZE the cities. NOW take a close look at #OXSPACE in Rotterdam 🙌 🌆 More and more concepts like these emerge from bigger cities all around Europe. Often very well curated and in line with the #Zeitgeist. With all the right reasons (!): that's exactly what city centres need. The pulse of the times, local and from the community - not off the shelf. 🛑 Concept strategy: Very well researched (by IDEO), curated, designed and with a strong purpose:"firstly, you must consider the nuances of the community you’re designing for – because no two are the same. We have to account for how the community uses a space, how that might be improved, and who these people are.The initial idea behind OX.Space in its current form stems from a vision to create more sustainable and liveable cities.💡 Housed in one of Rotterdam’s car-free high streets in a monumental building formerly roofed the city’s bookstore Donner and 👉 has long been vacant, the venture is further described as 👉 ‘an ever-changing, cross-cultural blend of food and wine, goods and apparel, entertainment, arts and wellbeing’."The 6-monthly changing programme offers gems such as:Film screening / Wine tasting / Women Circle / Masterclasses ...OX: Oxygen for the City OX's program will be on until March 2024, it will then be undergoing renovation to re-open a bigger, better version of OX Space by the end of the year. 🤝 Quote: Frame & IDEOPics: IG @ox.space, Michele Margot #InnovationCulture #FutureCity #Community #RetailExperience

Check out this testimony by the occupant of our very first oPEN Lab dwelling under renovation, a privately owned dwelling in the Garden city of Waterschei, Genk:"Honestly, I wasn't into energy efficient living at all. It wasn't until we bought our new house, this house, and I came into contact with Stephanie that I started thinking about it. And yes, heat pumps, solar panels: that's the future. I definitely don't want to go back in time, but look into the future and move forward"Some take-aways:👉 Offer trust-worthy renovation advise through renovation coaches such as Stebo vzw to help end users understand their options and increase their renovation ambitions👉 Make use of pivotal moments such as buying or inheriting a property 👉 Invest time (and in our case: coffee and waffles ☕🧇 ) in convincing end-users, it does pay off!Stay tuned for more updates from our #livinglab!oPEN Lab - Stebo vzw - Stad Genk - VITO - EnergyVille

Great to participate in #PLaceMakingEurope 2023 StrasbourgSUMMERY OF MY KEY NOTE : 1.Area development has evolved, and now is at one hand much more connected to the early phases as it is to the user and management phase. By this Placemaking is a generator for place led development going on to place management2.New questions on lively areas/plinths, shared mobility and energy production need collective answers and investments which render in the management phase.3.The new economy in cities have to be developed in an new mix in high density. Don’t waste good companies in the area: Keep the economy in. Use placemaking as a start for a new profile for the area4.Looking at the business case of the investor:·Better use end good management means les costs and uncertainty and risk for investors.·Joined area management can add to this and also brings social return by enrolling the community·More quality means less vacancy but also less circulation of lessees·Long term attractivess also means less economic aging of the real estateThis al comes back into an better rate of return and an higher result on investment over longer term. Most effective is a longterm perspective on area development and value creation. Slow money, sustainable systems for affordable housing and workplaces by means of new structures for value creation and value capturing or even better value sharing. HOW TO CREATE A SUCCESSFUL INNOVATION DISTRICT?At the Dutch real estate fair Provada yesterday, two sessions stood out for their focus on innovation districts. AM Vastgoed presented plans for the station areas in Zwolle and 's Hertogenbosch, highlighting how these areas are being reimagined to drive future growth and innovation. In a seminar hosted by Arup, attention was given to innovation areas in transition, with a primary focus on the development and challenges of innovation districts. It became clear that creating such districts is no straightforward task. It requires a long-term vision and a great deal of flexibility. The Netherlands is witnessing a surge in initiatives to develop innovation districts. This concept resonates well because it aligns with the needs and expectations of young professionals regarding their workplaces. However, given the complexity and significant impact of these projects, it is essential to carefully consider the actual development opportunities before proceeding. Innovation districts are not merely about constructing new buildings but involve creating dynamic environments that foster collaboration, creativity, and sustainable growth. The sessions at Provada offered invaluable insights into the essential elements required for a successful innovation district. This includes integrating community needs, ensuring multimodal accessibility, and maintaining affordable space for start-ups and small businesses. For those interested in the practicalities and strategies behind creating thriving innovation districts, follow this link to an article that explores the key requirements for a well-planned innovation district: https://lnkd.in/etRFZX3cShortly summarised: Key characteristics of innovation districts include dense, mixed-use environments that connect educational institutions with entrepreneurial entities and are well-integrated with transport and digital infrastructure. Economic viability demands a solid foundation of innovative companies and start-ups. The physical environment must also support high-density, compact areas facilitating interaction and collaboration with multimodal accessibility and multifunctional public spaces. Management and organisation are essential, requiring public-private partnerships and a clear, flexible long-term strategy. Ultimately, the feasibility and potential of innovation district initiatives in the Netherlands can be accurately assessed only through thorough analysis.Paul Jansen Vivian Scheepers Benny Ng, PhD Marcella Wiffrie Marius Woldberg Walter Stam Paul Guldemond Ralph Geers#InnovationDistricts #UrbanDevelopment #RealEstate #Provada #AMVastgoed #Arup #SustainableGrowth #YoungProfessionalsPhoto: Belval Innovation District, Luxembourg (copyright iStock / Jacques van Dinteren)
