There are rumbles of concern for many community members in a Shelbyville neighborhood after a man was gunned down and left for dead in the middle of the night.Police say, 24-year-old Chase Dempsey was killed just after midnight near a home on juniper drive, and another man was shot and taken to a nearby hospital."I was literally asleep in my bedroom," said Brandon Thornton, a nearby neighbor.Thornton said that's when he heard a sound he'll never forget"I just heard screaming out of nowhere," Thornton said. "I'm like what's going on? Why is this lady screaming?"When he stepped outside he got his answer."There was a whole bunch of cops, and the lights were going," Thornton said. "I'm talking to my neighbor like, 'what's going on?' He said, 'somebody got shot.'"The screams he heard were from the mother of 24-year-old son Chase Dempsey after she learned her son took his last breath lying in a neighbor's yard. "She had a really piercing scream," Thornton said. "It was just sad, really sad."Police said they also found a second victim shot in another nearby yard. That victim was taken to a nearby hospital with what police called life-threatening injuries.According to the Shelbyville Police Department, the public need not worry about their safety. They believe the shooting was a targeted attack, not some random act of violence. However, Maj. Bill White said, random or not, it's proof that no area is shielded from these types of violent crimes."It's not here yet," White said. "But this was a perfect example that there's always is potential for it."Now White is urging the community to keep their eyes and ears open."We're hoping to get this figured out soon, exactly what happened," White said. "We want to get justice served."Until then, Thornton said people need to think before acting. "I don't know why they shot the person or what the reason was, but I don't see the point in doing it," Thornton said. "Just be safe. No need to keep hurting each other like we're doing."It's unclear if anyone else is involved. If anyone has information regarding this incident or has cell phone video, please contact crime stoppers at 502-633-4500 or 502-633-2326.
